Coach Insurance Comparison
APC vs. Hiscox:
Coach Liability Insurance Comparison
Association of Professional Coaches (APC) and Hiscox both offer liability insurance that can protect coaching businesses, but the coverage is structured differently. We compared Professional Liability and General Liability limits, occurrence-based vs. claims-made coverage, defense costs, business property options, Cyber coverage, and annual pricing.
Quick Answer
APC vs. Hiscox: The Quick Answer
APC and Hiscox can both provide liability coverage for a coaching business, but the Professional Liability structure, limits, included protections, and total annual price differ substantially.
Higher Professional Liability Limits With APC
APC provides $2M each occurrence / $4M aggregate Professional Liability limits. The Hiscox Professional Liability configuration reviewed provides up to $1M each claim / $1M aggregate.
Occurrence-Based vs. Claims-Made
APC Professional Liability is occurrence-based. Hiscox Professional Liability is claims-made, so continuous coverage and claim-reporting timing are especially important.
More Protections Included With APC
APC Professional includes Client Accident Protection, Identity Theft Protection, Assault & Battery, Business Personal Property, and Business Income / Extra Expense. Hiscox provides some comparable business protections through separate policy options, while several of these APC benefits are not included in the coach coverage reviewed.
A Significant Difference in Annual Price
APC Professional is $275 per year. The Hiscox configuration we reviewed was $421 for Professional Liability + $495 for the BOP, for a combined annual cost of $916.
The takeaway: Hiscox offers a broader small-business insurance approach, while APC is designed specifically for coaches. In the configurations reviewed, APC provides higher Professional Liability limits, occurrence-based protection, more included coach-focused protections, and a substantially lower annual price.
APC vs. Hiscox
Compare the policy features that may matter most when choosing liability insurance for your coaching practice.
The two programs take different approaches. APC combines $2M / $4M Professional and General Liability limits, occurrence-based coverage, and several additional protections within its coach-focused program. Hiscox offers claims-made Professional Liability alongside separate General Liability and Business Owner’s Policy options, allowing businesses to build coverage through multiple policies.
About the Hiscox price: The $916 annual amount reflects the Professional Liability + Business Owner’s Policy configuration we completed. Hiscox also offers standalone General Liability coverage. We are continuing to verify the price of that configuration so the annual-cost comparison can be updated if appropriate.
Hiscox information reflects published coverage materials, a live quote, and information confirmed with a Hiscox representative in September 2026. Pricing and available limits can vary by business, location, services, selected coverage, and underwriting. Hiscox has not reviewed, authorized, sponsored, or endorsed this comparison.
Where APC and Hiscox Are Similar
Although the two options differ in several important ways, they also share some useful features for coaches looking for Professional and General Liability protection.
Professional + General Liability
Both offer Professional Liability and General Liability coverage for coaching businesses, although Hiscox structures the coverage through separate policy options while APC combines both within its coach-focused program.
Defense Costs Outside the Limits
Both keep defense costs outside the liability limits, so covered legal defense expenses do not reduce the stated liability limit available for settlements or judgments.
Additional Insured Coverage Is Available
APC Professional and Premium include unlimited Additional Insureds at no extra fee. Hiscox offers blanket Additional Insured coverage with no stated limit; scheduled endorsements are also available, with the first one free and additional scheduled endorsements at $50 each.
Cyber Protection Is Available
Both offer optional Cyber protection. APC Cyber is $149 per year with $100,000 per privacy claim / $250,000 aggregate, while the Hiscox Cyber configuration reviewed was $351 per year with $250,000 / $250,000 limits.
These similarities make the two options easier to compare directly, but the more meaningful differences are in Professional Liability policy form, coverage limits, included protections, business property structure, exclusions, and annual cost.
Where APC and Hiscox Differ
The biggest differences are in Professional Liability policy form, liability limits, included protections, Additional Insured structure, business property coverage, Cyber coverage, and annual cost.
1. Occurrence vs. Claims-Made Professional Liability
APC Professional Liability is occurrence-based, so coverage is tied to when the incident happened. Hiscox Professional Liability is claims-made, meaning coverage generally depends on the policy being active when the claim is made or reported, subject to the policy terms and any applicable reporting provisions.
2. Professional Liability Limits
APC provides $2 million each occurrence / $4 million aggregate for Professional Liability. The Hiscox configuration reviewed provides up to $1 million each claim / $1 million aggregate. APC therefore provides both a higher per-claim limit and a substantially higher annual aggregate.
3. Additional Insured Structure
APC Professional and Premium include unlimited Additional Insureds at no extra fee. Hiscox offers blanket Additional Insured coverage with no stated limit, but scheduled endorsements are handled differently: the first is free and additional scheduled endorsements are $50 each.
4. Client Accident Protection
APC Professional and Premium include separate Client Accident Protection with $25,000 in medical benefits, up to $50,000 in accidental death, dismemberment and paralysis benefits, and a $500,000 aggregate. Hiscox does not provide a separate client accident benefit for the coach coverage reviewed; its General Liability / BOP coverage includes a $5,000 per person Medical Payments benefit.
5. Assault & Battery and Sexual Misconduct / Abuse
APC includes a $25,000 Assault & Battery benefit and offers optional Sexual Misconduct & Abuse coverage for $169 per year. Hiscox confirmed that Assault & Battery is not included in the coach coverage reviewed and that Sexual Misconduct / Abuse coverage is not available for coaches.
6. Business Property and Business Income
APC Professional and Premium include $10,000 of Business Personal Property plus $10,000 of Business Income / Extra Expense at no additional cost. With Hiscox, business property is available through a Business Owner’s Policy. The configuration reviewed included $10,000 of Business Property along with Business Income and Extra Expense coverage.
7. Cyber Coverage Cost and Limits
APC offers optional Cyber coverage for $149 per year, with $100,000 per privacy claim and a $250,000 aggregate limit. The Hiscox Cyber configuration reviewed was $351 per year with $250,000 / $250,000 limits and a $10,000 deductible.
8. Annual Cost and Policy Structure
APC Professional is $275 per year and includes Professional Liability, General Liability, and several additional protections within one program. The Hiscox configuration reviewed totaled $916 per year: $421 for Professional Liability plus $495 for a Business Owner’s Policy that included General Liability and business property coverage.
Hiscox also offers standalone General Liability coverage. We are continuing to verify the price of that configuration for a more direct Professional Liability + General Liability cost comparison.
The main takeaway: Hiscox gives small businesses flexibility to combine Professional Liability, General Liability, a Business Owner’s Policy, and optional Cyber coverage based on their needs. APC takes a more coach-specific approach, combining occurrence-based Professional and General Liability, higher Professional Liability limits, business property and income protection, Client Accident Protection, Identity Theft Protection, and Assault & Battery coverage within its Professional membership at $275 per year.

Which May Be the Better Fit for You?
Both programs can provide liability protection for coaches. The better fit often comes down to policy structure, included protections, coverage limits, and how you prefer to build your insurance.
APC May Be a Better Fit If You:
- Prefer occurrence-based Professional Liability.
- Want $2M / $4M Professional and General Liability limits.
- Want a program designed specifically around coaching and multimodality practices.
- Value included protections such as Client Accident Protection, Identity Theft Protection, Assault & Battery, Business Personal Property, and Business Income / Extra Expense.
- Want unlimited Additional Insureds with no extra fee under APC Professional or Premium.
- Prefer a straightforward annual price of $275 for APC Professional.
Hiscox May Be a Better Fit If You:
- Are comfortable with claims-made Professional Liability.
- Prefer working with a broader small-business insurer that serves many professions and industries.
- Want the flexibility to purchase Professional Liability, General Liability, a Business Owner’s Policy, and Cyber coverage as separate policy options.
- Want a Business Owner’s Policy that can combine General Liability, business property, Business Income, and Extra Expense coverage.
- Need blanket Additional Insured coverage and are comfortable with separate charges for additional scheduled endorsements.
- Want the option for $250K Cyber limits in the configuration reviewed and are comfortable with the higher premium and deductible.
The difference is not simply price. APC takes a coach-specific approach with occurrence-based Professional Liability and several protections included within one program. Hiscox offers a more modular small-business approach, allowing you to combine separate liability, property, and Cyber policies based on your needs.

The Biggest Policy Difference: Occurrence vs. Claims-Made
APC and Hiscox both offer Professional Liability protection for coaches, but the coverage is structured differently. The timing of the incident and when the claim is made or reported can affect which policy responds.
APC: Occurrence-Based
With occurrence-based Professional Liability, the key date is when the incident happened. If the incident occurred while the policy was active, a claim made later can still fall under that policy period even after the policy has ended, subject to the policy terms.
Hiscox: Claims-Made Professional Liability
With claims-made Professional Liability, coverage generally depends on when the claim is made or reported as well as the applicable policy period and policy terms. Maintaining continuous coverage can be important because a claim made after a policy ends may not be covered unless applicable reporting provisions or extended reporting coverage apply.
Why this matters: With APC’s occurrence-based Professional Liability, coverage is tied to the date of the incident. With Hiscox’s claims-made Professional Liability, maintaining continuous coverage and understanding the policy’s claim-reporting requirements can be especially important. This difference can matter if a client raises a claim months or years after the coaching services were provided.
Coverage is subject to the terms, conditions, limits, exclusions, eligibility requirements, retroactive dates, and reporting provisions of the applicable policy.
